MUCH   y   MANY

Ambas palabras significan lo mismo (mucho-a; muchos-as) y a continuación veremos en qué situaciones se emplean cada una de ellas.

Usamos “many” con sustantivos contables (Un sustantivo contable es cualquier sustantivo que se puede contar, por ejemplo: cinco coches, tres niños, cuatro botellas):

• I don’t have many chairs. – Yo no tengo muchas sillas
• I haven’t bought many apples. Yo no he comprado muchas manzanas.
• She has many friends. Ella tiene muchos amigos.

Usamos "much" con sustantivos incontables (Un sustantivo incontable es cualquier sustantivo que no se puede contar, por ejemplo: oxígeno. No podemos decir "dos oxigenos" por ejemplo.)

• They don’t drink much water. Ellos no beben mucha agua.
• I don’t have much luck. Yo no tengo mucha suerte.

Al igual que “many”, si la identidad del sustantivo es obvia se puede omitir:

• Pregunta: Do you have money? ¿Tienes dinero?
• Respuesta: I don’t have much. No tengo mucho

Nota: Recuerda que un sustantivo contable es cualquier sustantivo que se puede contar, por ejemplo: cinco coches, tres niños, cuatro botellas y Un sustantivo incontable es cualquier sustantivo que no se puede contar, por ejemplo: “humo”.

HOW  MANY  /  HOW  MUCH

How many  y  how much significan ( Cuantos-as / Cuanto-a  ) y se utilizan para preguntar por cantidades de algo y siempre van seguidas de un sustantivo y luego el resto de la oración.

L a expresión How Many se utiliza para preguntar por sustantivos contables. Ejemplos:

How many cars do you have?  - ¿Cuántos carros tienes?

How many onions do you need? - ¿Cuántas cebollas necesitas?

How many shirts did you buy? - ¿Cuántas camisas compraste?

En los ejemplos anteriores utilizamos How many porque Cars (carros), onions (cebollas) y shirts (camisas) son sustantivos contables es decir que es posible establecer su número en unidades.

L a expresión How Much se utiliza para preguntar por sustantivos No contables. Ejemplos:

How much  Money do you have? - ¿Cuánto dinero tienes?

How much  flour do you need? - ¿Cuánta harina necesitas?

How much wine did you drink? - ¿Cuánto vino bebiste?

En los ejemplos anteriores utilizamos How much porque money (dinero), flour (harina) y wine (vino) son sustantivos No contables .
